CARTOON MUSIC Peter Graham Score and Set: $200
Originally written for percussionist Evelyn Glennie's Grammy-nominated Album
'Reflected in Brass', this wind band version is arranged in the style of Scott
Bradley, for long the doyen of composers of music for animation. His `Tom and
Jerry' scores reference a wide range of music, from Liszt to Schoenberg via
Tin Pan Alley. Sharp-eared listeners will catch similar quotes in Cartoon
Music. (Recorded on DOYCD 132)
CRY OF THE CELTS Ronan Hardiman arr. Peter Graham
Score and Set: $330
By huge demand this spectacular concert suite is now available for wind band.
Contains 5 movements: 1) Nightmare, (includes Lord of the Dance and
Stolen Kiss) 2) Suil a Ruin, 3) Breakout, 4) Lament, and 5) Victory.
Featured by the Royal Norwegian Navy Band. (Recorded on DOYCD 083)
GAELFORCE
Peter Graham Score and Set: $200
Gaelforce follows in Cry of the Celts style, and using three traditional folk
tunes exploits the colour and variety of the modern wind band. Firstly, the
slip jig, The Rocky Road to Dublin features the woodwind section. The
Minstrel Boy, and the final reel, Tossing the Feathers, have both
recently enjoyed renewed popularity courtesy of The Corrs. The
Minstrel Boy here features the solo flugel horn in contrast with woodwind
choir and mellow voices, while Tossing the Feathers is something of a
tour de force for drums, woodwind, and eventually the whole band.
SUMMON THE DRAGON
Peter Graham Score and Set: $165
Featuring the trumpet and trombone
sections, Summon the Dragon was written for The National Youth Band of
Wales (Music Director James Watson) in the style of movie composer John
Williams. From the opening brass fanfares, through lyrical woodwind passages
to the majestic finale, Summon the Dragon is sure to delight audiences.
SWEDISH FOLK SONG
Peter Graham Score and Set: $130
Swedish Folk Song, has it's origins in an old Scandinavian melody first
adapted by Stuart K. Hine in 1949 to his own sacred hymn, How Great Thou
Art. From the quiet opening on the solo flute to the full orchestration of
the final statement Graham balances us between echoes of the past and a
vibrant present wherein we discover the beauty of the song or hymn, at various
levels, once again.
WINDOWS OF THE WORLD
Peter Graham Score and Set: $400
Windows of the World, (wind version written for the Royal Norwegian
Navy Band), provides solo opportunities for several principal players. Graham
takes us first to Latin America, then to Japan, and onwards to sub-Saharan
Africa. We get a gentle reprieve via a nostalgic hint of the British Isles
before we land in the melting pot of all styles, the USA. In this final
movement the driving swing section is abruptly stopped and a drum cadenza
leads us back into the opening Latin music, with hints of the other styles as
well. Described by Professor Ron Holz as "a global musical village",
stylistic diversity is celebrated, and young musicians have fun while learning
to master and embrace the performance practice requirements of each.
The six movements 1) Amazonia 2) Rainforest 3) The Rising Sun 4) Drums of
Thunder 5) Celtic Dream and 6) Earth Walk can be programmed
individually.

PRELUDE SERIES of music for beginner bands (Grade 2)
Titles in the 'Prelude Series' are specifically scored for bands with few, if any, bass instruments but will also sound well on larger ensembles. The bass line is playable by any combination of bass clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone, trombone, euphonium or tuba; in the event that none of these is available, the palt for trombone/euphonium (8 flat TC) can be played by tenor saxophone. The tuned percussion palt is entirely optional and can be played byany available instrument(s). Each piece also includes a preliminary exercise. This is always in the same key as the accompanying piece and consists of a scale and chord progression that can be used for improving ensemble, balance, intonation and instrumental facility by changing tempo, articulation and dynamics.
CAPTAIN HORNBLOWER (Trumpet Solo) Bruce Fraser $130
CAPTAIN HORNBLOWER is a lively solo for the young trumpet player and is modelled on the 18h century 'trumpet tune' with its major and minor sections. As is the case with all solos, the balance between band and soloist must be carefully handled and the bands with the benefit of many bass instruments may wish to rest the brass while the soloist is playing.
CLOCKWISE Colin Cowles $130
The percussion in CLOCKWISE represents the ticking or winding of a clock and should, therefore, be:, as rhythmic as possible. Other 'clock' effects could be added, such as a scraper on the first beat of each bar and even a cuckoo or alarm bell at the end.
COOL DUDE Darrol Barry $130
COOL DUDE needs controlled playing to achieve the 'laid back' feel. It is not necessary for everyone to do the finger clicks at the start -accuracy is more important than quantity!
JAMAICA FAREWELL arr. Philip Sparke $130
This gentle Caribbean song is a useful introduction to syncopation for all instruments. Such rhythms should, however, be played smoothly and without undue accents to maintain the character of the melody.
MELTING THE ICE (Alto Sax Solo) Bruce Fraser $130
A lilting solo for the young alto saxophone player. While not taxing technically, it will required good breath control to achieve a nice flow in the solo part. Although it has a slow 'feel' to it, be careful not to play it too slowly.
MUMBO JUMBO Philip Sparke $130
A piece with a Latin American flavour though not specifically in any of the recognised dance styles. The first percussion part can be elaborated if additional players and instruments are available: bongoes, tambourine and claves will help here. Dynamics play an important part in this piece and should be carefully graded.
OPENIN' TIME Colin Cowles $130
OPENIN' TIME is a good introduction to syncopation for the young player and the various rhythms employed could be used as part of the preliminary exercise. The oboe solo can be played by divided flutes.
PROCESSIONAL OVERTURE Philip Sparke $130
PROCESSIONAL O VERTURE provides a good opportunity for developing a healthy band tone in both soft and loud
dynamics and introduces the concepts of 'DS al Coda'.
SPACEWALTZ Colin Cowles $130
SPACEWALTZ gives young bands the chance to learn waltz style and too wooden an approach should be avoided
by achieving the right amount of stress on the first beat of each bar (bass drum beware!).
STARBOUND Bruce Fraser $130
STARBOUND is a strong, driving piece and relies on good rhythmic playing from the bass instruments. It is a good introduction to playing triplets for all sections of the band and this could be introduced in the preliminary exercise. The trumpet solo could be played by the whole section if preferred.
THREE FOLK MINIATURES Bruce Fraser $130
Three Folk Miniatures (Good Mornin' to Ye; Shepherd Song; When the Sun Shines) reflect the style of old English
folk songs offering young players the opportunity to show off several acquired skills in performance.
TIJUANA TRUMPETS (Trumpet feature) Philip Sparke $130
Here is an opportunity for the trumpets to go through their paces! The syncopated nature of the tune may be unfamiliar to many young players, but once the sound is in their heads there shouldn't be a problem. The middle passage is a good test of counting and needs everyone to be confident of their entries. Players are also introduced here to the concept of first- and second-time bars (endings) and the D. C.
TOTALLY TROPICAL! Darrol Barry $130
TOTALLY TROPICAL! is in bright Caribbean mood and will benefit from good, rhythmic playing. Flutes, oboes, clarinets and trumpets all have to play the little chromatic figure that starls the main tune and this may need slow practice to become fluent. Additional percussion instruments may be added to give a 'Calypso' sound.
WHIRLWIND (Flute Solo) Bruce Fraser $130
WHIRLWIND is a flute solo and (despite the title!) it will be found that a steady waltz tempo works best. Obviously, it
is imporlant that the accompaniment remains delicate and that dynamics are adhered to.
WINDFALL (March) Bruce Fraser $130
WINDFALL should be taken at a steady march tempo, with full note values and is a useful piece for developing a good band sound. Dynamic changes are particularly important to avoid monotony in the overall sound and young players are introduced to the concept of D. C. al fine
YE OLDE DANCE MUSICKE Bruce Fraser $130
This piece reflects the style of Elizabethan dance music. The opening tempo should be quite steady, though played with energy. Good balance is required to achieve the contrasts. The change of tempo should be easily achieved, again taking care with the balance, dynamics and accents to produce an energetic performance. Performance time 1'45"
YO, BRO! Darrol Barry $130
YO, BRO! Has a Latin feel about it which requires good rhythmic playing with a strong beat supplied by the percussion.

BATTLES AND CHANTS (large format score) Nigel Clarke $330
BATTLES AND CHANTS is in three movements. The solo clarinet can be heard in the role of Cassivellaunus defending his territory against the Romans (the wind and brass instruments), and on occasions the clarinet wins the upper hand. The first movement, 'Foreign Invader', starts slowly on the timpani and leads to a clarinet solo followed by a full- blooded fanfare representing Cassivellaunus, commander of the Southern Tribes. This section soon changes tempo, anticipating battles and skirmishes to come. The second movement, Betrayal', is the emotional core of the concerto, with Cassivellaunus contemplating defeat. The timpani start the movement, reflecting the opening of the first. A hymn-Iike chant in the wind and brass allows the soloist to soar over the top of the band with melancholic phrases. The third and final movement, Defeat of the Southern Tribes, starts with Caesar, represented by the percussion section, marching towards Cassivellaunus' Hertfordshire stronghold for the final showdown. After a full-blooded battle the work ends with the final sounding of Cassivellaunus' fanfare, but this time heralding his defeat and Caesar's victory. (Grade 5- Soloist 6) Performance time 21'02" (This work was commissioned by and is dedicated to Unda Merrick, Philip Ellis and the Hertfordshire County Youth Wind Orchestra and is featured on the recording QPRM137D LINDA MERRICK, Linda Merrick and the RNCM Wind Orchestra)

CLARINET CONCERTO (large format score) Martin Ellerby $350
The opening 'Carousel' takes a leaf out of the American minimalist composers' book and is energetic and resourceful throughout, conjuring up images of a fairground ride that is not too much of an intrepid adventure! The central 'Cameo' presents and re-presents a delicate, highly legato, melisma for the soloist. A somewhat brooding central episode provides both a moment of contrast and the opportunity for the soloist to deliver some free cadenza-type material before returning to the security of the opening calm. The closing 'Charabanc' is a freely developed rondo-style finale embracing influences from jazz and other light music forms. Listeners are encouraged to use their own imagination, as it is intended to be whatever you want it to be! Performance time 15'16"

DIVERSIONS -Variations on a Swiss Folk Song Philip Sparke $250
Variations on 'Der Heimetvogel', which dates from the 19th century. The variations are based on small fragments of the tune, rather than the whole melody, and are prefaced by an introduction based on the opening three notes. This is followed by .a presentation of the tune itself, which is played twice in different guises.
Variation I Vivo e scherzando. This takes the form of a moto perpetuo, the main theme starting with the first four notes of the folksong. There is constant eighth note activity, under which a second theme develops and leads into:
Variation II Subito meno mosso. A macabre 12/8 march. This is interrupted by snatches of the song itself, played in the lower half of the band. The trombones try to state the theme in full but are in turn cast aside by the march tune which brings the variation to a close.
Variation III lendo espressivo. An expressive melody unfolds and eventually builds to a climax for the whole band. As it subsides, the folksong's chorus is quietly recalled, leading to a short cadenza which sets the mood for the finale.
Variation IV Vivace. This takes the form of a fugue which develops on strictly classical lines. Eventually the folk song tries to establish itself and, after a full-band statement of the fugue theme, is presented in its entirety with the fugue theme in two-part counterpoint. A climax is reached and the piece ends with a coda based on material from Variation I. Performance time 15'55" (Recorded on QPRM134D THE KINGS GO FORTH, Central Band of the RAF)

This new version for concert band by Michael McOermott was made in celebration of Malcolm Arnold's 80th birthday. Performance time 2'00"
FANFARE TO PLANET EARTH & MILLENNIUM MARCH (large format score) David Fanshawe/Philip Sparke $220
These two works may be performed individually or, as published, together. Fanfare to Planet Earth -The Fanfare opens dramatically with heraldic trumpets answered by sforzando strikes on deep percussion. Performance time 1 '50". Millennium March -Constructed along classical lines, the theme of Millenium March is catchy and not without humour. Its recurring motif on trumpets, con brio, develops the opening bars of the Fanfare. The March gathers momentum through several dramatic key-changes and ends with a surprise flourish of chromaticism, marked Tempo Apocalyptic. Cannons and fireworks are optional! Performance time 4'10"

MOUNTAIN SONG Philip Sparke $200
Mountain Song is a decription of a short mountain walk the composer took in the Austrian Ziller Valley. The work ends with the church bell tolling quietly. (Grade 4-5) Performance time 7'05" (Recorded on QPRM124D MIGHTY VOICE, Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.3)
MUSIC FOR AROSA (large format score) Philip Sparke $250
This work was commissioned in 1996 by the Arosa Cultural committee and first performed in Arosa in that year. The majestic introduction opens on trombones and euphonium, heralding a legato theme, chorale-like in character. A pair of flutes introduce a new theme. A trumpet introduces a series of highly syncopated solos, which feature many metre changes, and the tempo increases when playful motifs are exchanged between various sections of the band. A solo clarinet introduces an expressive tune. A brass chorale follows, with interruptions from the flute and bassoon, until the clarinet tune is played by the whole band. This reaches a climax and the mood subsides to reach a quiet horn chord. The broad legato tune returns and the excitement increases until the march theme triumphantly returns to full band. This leads to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare and closed the work emphatically. (Grade 5) Performance time 11'01" (Recorded on QPRM138D BREAKING THE CENTURY, Central Band of the RAF)

NEW WORLD DANCES (large format score) Martin Ellerby $250
Cast in three short movements the work endeavours to recreate the pioneering spirit of the journey across America
that make up the suite are symbolic in an analogous sense to this 'reaching' principle: the first -Earth Dance -is a vigorous overture, pushing out the frontiers; the interlude -Moon Dance -contemplates the huge distances to be crossed and Sun Dance represents the realisation of the American dream, rhythmic and full of energy. Written in affectionate tribute to America and its people, New World Dances was rather symbolically completed on July 4th! (Grade 6) Performance time 8'45" (Recorded on QPRM1340 THE KINGS GO FORTH, Central Band of the Royal Air Force)

Near the end there is an elaborate and technically demanding cadenza. The wind band orchestration is by James Gourlay. {Grade 5- Soloist 6) Performance time 19'44"

WARCRYE OF ELFEGEN Geoffrey Lawrence $280
The piece depicts scenes from the mythological kingdom of Elfegen, the North European home of a ferocious race of warriors. From the tranquility of the opening, where first can be heard the eerie 'warcrye', things move quickly on; figures are scurrying up and down the hills moving into battle positions. The intensity increases constantly and soon a fierce battle rages. In time, the fighting subsides and a period of reflective calm replaces the chaos that has gone before. During the lull in battle a lone voice is heard, as if trying to appeal for peace, for people to resolve their differences and see sense. The voice is, however, ignored and the conflict sparks off once more. The ruthless Elfegen warriors are not content until the victory is complete, a very loud, and triumphant climax is heard as another battle reaches its inevitable conclusion. (Grade 5) Performance time 6'38"
(Recorded on QPRM133D FESTIVALOF MUSIC 1999, Massed Bands of the Royal Air Force)
