Among all the members of the brass family, the trumpet is the highest register. This is one of the oldest musical instruments, which dates back to the 1500 BCE. This is a musical instrument that is made out of brass tubing. The brass tubing is bent twice forming a round oblong shape. This is played by blowing air on it through closed lips. This creates a buzzing sound, which if properly played, can make a melody.
Types
The most common trumpet is a transposing instrument that which is pitched in B♭. The tubing length of this type of trumpet is around 134cm. The early trumpets did not have any valves yet. Now, contemporary trumpets have three piston valves or three royalty valves. More valves means lower pitch for the trumpet sound.
History
Crude trumpets are being used a long time ago in the form of horns or shells. These instruments were not meant for music but for alarm or to amplify a sound or a message. Later on trumpets were used for ceremonies. In Tibet and Rome, it was used for magic spells. It soon evolved into a musical instrument. In the 14th century the trumpet was used as a tool of war to disseminate information. In the 16th century, it was Germany who produced the most trumpets. It was used for military and other ceremonial purposes. But in the end of the century, it was used for music. The trumpet was used as a musical instrument during the 17th and 18th century. Valves were added on the trumpet during 1814. The addition of valves revolutionized the trumpet for musical use. The trumpets of today are very different from the trumpets long ago. Contemporary trumpets are now made of metal making it easier to mold so that creating melodies would be easier.
Parts
If you want to learn how to play the trumpet, it would be best to know the parts of the trumpet first. The trumpet bell is the part where the music comes out. There are some trumpet bells that are lacquered in gold to make a mellow sound while other bells are silver plated to make a brighter sound. There are customized bells made of sterling silver to make a unique sound. The bell will determine how the trumpet will sound. There are expensive trumpets that have adjustable and removable bells to make it easier for the player to change the sound it makes. The finger hook lets the other hand of the musician free while making sure the trumpet is stable. Valve casings are three cylinder holders that hold the pistons, which changes the sound of the trumpet. After blowing air into the mouthpiece, the air goes straight to the valve piston. The lead pipe connects the tuning slide with the mouthpiece. The tuning slide adjusts the trumpet’s pitch. Valve slides produces the sound and the pitch of the notes. The mouthpiece is where you blow the air to create the sound. The mouthpiece is usually made of brass.
