A NEW management team will take charge of Australia’s National Band at the proposed world championship in Kerkrade in July.
Former Queensland secretary and youth camp administrator Meg Fixter has been appointed administrator of the National band with Kew horn player Wendy Bardsley as assistant manager.
Both will work closely with band conductor Mark Ford.
The National Band Council was required to make the changes following the resignation of Robert Bedwell as tour administrator.
The NBC vice-president and Band Association of NSW president, Mr Bedwell relinquished involvement following a change in employment for this year.
It has been announced that the National Band will have its first rehearsal in Melbourne on the weekend of January 22 and 23, following by Adelaide on March 27 (following the Nationals), Brisbane between May 13 and 15 and a final weekend rehearsal in Sydney from June 24 to 26 before flying out of Australia on June 27.
Brisbane Excelsior tuba player Julie Woods, a member of the band, has taken on the role of securing funding to offset the cost to players.
“With the change in band administration, we are just commencing an intensive campaign to secure funding,” said NBC president.
“We still have more than 6 months before the tour – ample time to secure funding, sponsorship and financial support for band members. Whilst on tour, the band will be taking the opportunity to rehearse frequently. All accommodation venues are being selected on the understanding that they will be able to make a rehearsal room available for the band’s use.”
Mr Fry said the championships were an exciting prospect for raising the level of awareness for the brass band movement in Australia. - 21/12/2004
